Pencil Portrait of a Rescued Dog in Sedona, AZ

This year I was contacted by Cher H. of Canada. She wanted to commission a portrait of her brother’s dog as a gift for his upcoming wedding. As the family is quite spread out, and they were all meeting in CA for the wedding, this made shipping the portrait and consequently carrying it in a suitcase problematic at best! Cher was delighted that I would supply a scan of the portrait so that she would have something to easily print out and transport as a gift. As the wedded couple lives Sedona, I was able to deliver the gift personally upon their return!

“Scooter” is a rather famous dog in Sedona, AZ. She was rescued by some wonderfully caring people in 2009. At the time, Scooter was giving birth to a litter of puppies … in the street! She has come to be loved by all who meet her, and I was so very honored to be chosen to create her portrait!

This summer I had the pleasure of creating a pencil portrait of “Smokey” the Husky dog. Talk about an expressive creature! His mom Tricia sent many wonderful photos which allowed me to come up with a composition she liked. The portrait turned out great, and evidently Smokey has a mind of his own as he sent me followup pictures expressing his joy at being immortalized LOL!

Using Print-on-Demand to Create Fine Art Prints

Emerging artists frequently ask the question: "How do I make print (reproductions) from my drawings [or paintings]?" This is often asked after numerous attempts at making reproductions - usually with disappointing results. Many artists think that finding a good printer is the problem, when in fact the secret is in the image preparation!

The key to getting good reproductions is the image scan & prep. You need to start with a top quality high-res image scan. This scan then needs to be edited for reproduction use via a program like Photoshop. Once that is done, the rest is easy - you can have the end result file printed through a variety of outlets - a local printer, a print-on-demand website, etc. (My current favorite source for POD (print on demand) fine art prints is Fine Art America. I have a number of my open edition Horse, Dog and Cat prints available there now.)

Preparing images for reproduction is a specialized area, and what needs to be learned & understood could not be covered in a single blog post. So, if you can find a local graphic designer that has a good scanner and specializes in pre-press work, that would help a lot. If not, you might try Fine Print Imaging. They are based out of Colorado and can do just the scan, or the editing work and even the reproductions. I used them once when I had a drawing too large for my scanner and their service was great.

This piece was a joy to create as the client supplied many wonderful photos of this expressive animal from which to create the final art. Lori Draper, who ordered this portrait, said: “We gave this portrait to our sister as a birthday gift in memory of her dog, Muri. He was a beautiful 4 year old Afghan Hound with lots of personality!”

Recent Pencil Drawing - Juniper Tree of Sedona, Arizona

This 2010 pencil drawing is a scene from a hiking trail in Sedona, Arizona. “Found by Courthouse Butte” features a twisted Juniper tree in a wash behind Courthouse Butte on the Courthouse Loop trail. Locals and visitors to the Village of Oak Creek area are very familiar with this trail, which partially overlaps the Big Park Loop trail.

April 2010: Louisville, KY Artwork Created for Derby Celebration

This year I once again had the honor of working with the Louisville Hyatt Regency again this year to create a special commemorative drawing for the 2010 Kentucky Derby festivities. 500 signed and numbered limited edition prints were made of this drawing, and were special gifts to the Hyatt’s derby weekend guests.

The Hyatt staff saw the “Canton Lives” drawing on my website, and requested that special landmarks in Louisville be included in the drawing. The artwork features the Kennedy Bridge, the Slugger Museum, Belle of Louisville, Churchill Downs and a map of Kentucky.

While these prints were exclusive to the Hyatt, and not available for open sale, I do have many other horse and horse racing art prints available!

How to Draw - Selecting Your Drawing Paper

In a recent post we looked at the best pencils to use for pencil drawing. That is usually the question emerging artists ask when they decide to delve into pencil drawing more fully.

Ironically, even though there are a myriad of options when it comes to pencils, probably the single most important aspect of a quality drawing is not the pencils, but rather the paper.

Top quality, acid-free paper is essential if you want the best drawing results. Standard drawing paper has a poor-quality surface, and lacks the qualities needed to allow rich drawing development. Everyday papers also tend to have acidic qualities, which means they will yellow and/or discolor over time. (Think of old newspapers as an example - they turn yellow and discolor.)

You will also want to consider the surface of the paper. Most drawing surfaces have a slight texture, or “tooth” to them. These are usually known as vellum surfaces. Drawing paper is also available with an extremely smooth surface, which would be known as a plate surface. You can purchase drawing paper as actual paper, or in heavier weights known as bristol board. A sheet of bristol is heavy enough that both sides have suitable drawing surfaces. There are also illustration boards - these are heavier still, though only one side is suitable as a drawing surface.

As a general rule, most artists using pencil, charcoal or pastel will prefer the vellum surface. The texture in the paper provides some friction to the media applied, and thus allows for a greater range of effects. Smooth/plate surface paper is usually preferred by pen & ink artists as very clean lines can be achieved with such a surface. For myself, I prefer a bristol surface when drawing “living” subjects such as people or horse or dog drawings. I like the plate surface for more mechanical subject such as aviation drawings or historic home portraits.

In addition to the weight or thickness of the paper, you will want to consider brightness. Drawing papers come in a range of “whites.” Some are soft white and have an antique appearance. Others are off-white. My favorites are the brighter whites, as I feel I can obtain the greatest range of shadows on these papers.

For years my paper of choice has been the drawing paper is Strathmore 500. It’s bright white surface and acid-free/archival properties make it a superb choice for pencil drawing. Strathmore 500 is available in paper weight, bristol board and illustration board. I also like this paper as it is available in large sheets - up to 30"x40." My top two suppliers for this paper are DickBlick.com and UtrechtArt.com.

Featured Pencil Artist: Duane Lawrence

This article begins the first in a series of Featured Pencil Artists. Over the years I have been privileged to meet many fellow pencil artist friends, both personally and online. This blog will now broaden it's horizons by featuring the work of these wonderful artisans on a regular basis.

Duane Lawrence - Portrait Artist Extraordinaire

Duane has been drawing since he was very young. Just about every child draws, but at an early age Duane began to get responses from the adults in his life which indicated that perhaps his drawings were special.

He began with super heroes from the Marvel comic book collection and even thought he might become a comic book illustrator. But in his late teens he switched over to portraiture and began to explore the style that he employs today.

Duane took art classes in high school and college but soon after that all creations went dormant for a while. In fact, he did not put a drawing pencil to paper for many years. Several years ago he began to draw again, in earnest, and today there is always a work in progress.

Mr. Lawrence works in the "photorealist" style, similar to artists Chuck Close and Robert Bechtle who use photographs as reference material. These works are all hand drawn and are not conversions from photos by using any software rendering techniques (like Photoshop). Each drawing takes a great many hours to complete.

In addition to being an accomplished visual artist, Duane Lawrence is also a vocalist and professional voice-over artist!

The Best Pencils to Use for Pencil Drawings

“What kind of pencils do you use?” I think this is one of the most common questions I have been asked over the years.

I often receive emails posing this question. Many emerging artists have tremendous talent. They know the time and energy that goes into a detailed drawing, and they want to use the best materials possible.

My answer to this question surprises some. For the most part, I use ordinary pencils purchased from an office supply store. I like mechanical pencils, as the leads are quite thin and thus give me a sharp point without wasted time sharpening and making a corresponding mess. The mechanical pencils are available in several thicknesses too. My favorites are the .5 and .7 thickness leads. Most mechanical pencils come with HB leads, though you can purchase several hardness levels separately, such as H, B and 2B. There are also .3 leads, though they are so thin that the lead is almost too fragile to use effectively.

I do 90% of my drawing with the HB pencil lead. Then, I use leads the B to 6B range to “punch out” the darkest areas of my drawing. See my Pencil Drawings Process page for an illustration of this effect. My two favorite art suppliers for pencils and pencil leads are DickBlick Art Supplies and Utrecht Art Supplies.

Another important aspect of pencil drawing is the type and quality of paper used. But I'll save that subject for another post!

I am happy to announce that lifetime Canton, Ohio resident Jim Hartsock has purchased my original Farrier artwork, titled "Trim and Fit." Jim knows Canton as few do, having spent his entire life here, including 36 years working for Republic Steel. He had horses himself, a passion which started with a trip to the Stark County Fairground years ago. Jim ultimately joined the Stark County Western Saddle Horse Association and enjoyed his horses with other like-minded souls. Mr. Hartsock found my work on display at the North Canton Medical Foundation, where the exhibit will continue until the end of September.

My latest rodeo pencil drawing is long over due. Ever since creating the Bull Rider Rodeo Artwork, I've been asked again and againg to come up with a Barrel Racing theme. Well, finally, here it is! This Barrel Racer Cowgirl artwork was a great deal of FUN to draw! I'm glad I finally got this one to the drawing table. More rodeo pictures will be following soon!

I have my friend Deb Simon to thank over, and over, and over again for the use of her rodeo photographs and harness racing shots as reference material for my pencil drawings. Deb Simon Photography is the place to shop for Wildlife, Wild Bird and other nature photos!

This harness racing art drawing has also been on my "frequently requested" list! My other Standardbred horse prints are nearly sold out, so this piece is finished not a day too soon. This drawing features not so much an actual race, as the “dreams” of harness racing greatness. The horse mane swirling into the track emphasizes the dreams concept and gives the drawing a more whimsical style.

Memories of my trip to Dubai in 1999

While looking for new photos to use for Twitter & FaceBook ID's, I found pictures from my 1999 trip to Dubai. Wow - that was nearly 10 years ago now! My equine artwork was exhibited in the 3rd Annual Arab Horse Expo in Dubai. My Australian artist friend, Anna Maria Place, traveled with me across the globe to help me at this equine-themed trade show.

The Horse Expo was a successful event, and we met horse enthusiasts from around the world. One of my best original drawings, "Clean Round," sold to a customer from Germany. While the trip focused mostly on work, Anna Maria and I made the most of our time there and took in as many tourist activities as possible. Those activities included a Dhow Cruise, a shopping trip to the Gold Souks in Dubai City Centre and a Desert Safari trip in jeeps. We even stopped in Amsterdam for a day on the way home.

The Burj Al Arab was just being completed while we were in Dubai. This was before much of the rest of the world heard about it! We were fortunate enough to be treated to a private tour of one of the racing stables. Among other things, we watched as horses did their therapeutic workouts in a 1/4 mile swimming pool! Anna Maria and I also attended a fund-raiser dinner as part of a golf event, where several of my donated works were auctioned to a wonderful supportive crowd. These pictures sure brought back some great memories - it was the trip of a lifetime!

Kelli's Pencil Drawings are now on Exhibit at the North Canton Medical Foundation

Throughout the summer, you can find my original pencil drawings and limited edition prints on display at the Health Education Building of the North Canton Medical Foundation. The North Canton Medical Foundation is one of the largest independent public healthcare foundations in Ohio, and the only one in the nation with a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) designation. Founded by Dr. Ralph Warburton, the facility has been open since 1972.

Located in North Canton, Ohio, the Foundation encompasses two buildings which include a Medical Center and A Health Education Center. Satellite offices which provide internal medicine and/or specialized healthcare services are located in Bolivar, Canton South, North Canton and Massillon.

Though a wide range of medical services are offered, the Foundation is more than just a high tech medical facility. Through their success and the continued support of faithful contributors, they are able to offer programs which benefit patients. Surplus revenue is reinvested into funds to assist those in need and to provide education programs that enhance the quality of life in the community. These programs include, but are not limited to: Charitable Medical Clinics, Prescription Assistance Program, Health Education Library, Community Education Programs, Health Fairs and Clinics and Physician Training.

The Health Education Center building, where my work is on display, is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 8:00-1:00. Artwork will be on display through September. All framed works are for sale, and brochures are available.

New site for my "Other" Black and White Pencil Drawings

I just created a new website to help spread the word about my "other" pencil drawings! As much of my pencilplace.com site is dedicated to, and optimized for, horse drawings and dog drawings, I thought it might be a good idea to create a separate, smaller site to make mention of my "other" drawing creations.

These drawings include historic towns & buildings, vintage aviation (biplanes) and vintage automotive artwork. The new site is called BlackandWhitePencilDrawings.com. Several of these pieces were commissions for towns or businesses. Other pieces were original creations of my own inspirations.

I currently have several sample pencil drawings posted on the site, including the National First Ladies Library in Canton, Ohio - a drawing which the Library now uses for its promotional items in the gift store. Other drawings include: The Old Stage Coach Inn from Brecksville, Ohio, vintage Corvette drawings, and vintage biplanes such as the Stearman and Waco models.

My latest pencil drawing, titled “Crowd Pleasers,” was inspired by a recent visit of the Budweiser Draft Horse Hitch. It seemed much of the town of Canton turned out to see these gentle giants! Getting photographs was a real challenge, as people surrounded the horses from the moment the critters came off their trailers. I was fortunate to have a wonderful art patron who agreed to let me use some of her shots to create this drawing. Thanks Mary!

Well, I supposed I could now officially be called an "Internet Junkie!" Last week I attended the Tuscawaras County Mac User Group and saw a wonderful presentation on iWeb. Inspired by what I saw, and having had too much coffee, I proceeded to order my upgrade to iLife '09 that day! And boy, has this software ever been fun! (Like I needed more software toys after getting the hang of Dreamweaver and Adobe CS4!)

To test out this '09 package, I created a new website as an introduction to my fine art Pencil Drawings of Horses and Dogs: www.kelliswan.com.

iWeb has some nifty features, such as the ability to make Albums for portfolio images. In my case, I utilized two albums to separate out my horse and dog artwork samples.

And with the new iPhoto capabilities I was able to create a short slide show - with music! All it took was a few minutes of photo-prep, create the slide show in iPhoto, export and drag into iWeb. Lots of fun and not much time at all! My little slide show can be found under the "Latest Pencil Drawings" tab.

While iWeb is lots of fun, and a great Sunday project, I found through trial and error that SEO is a bit of a challenge. After a quick Google search, I found a blog post on SEO for iWeb, which helped a great deal. Setting up html navigation to replace iWeb's default navigation should help. I'll also be refining text content as time goes on.

The Budweiser Clydesdale are coming to Canton, Ohio!

The Clydesdales are coming to Canton, Ohio. They’re bringing their state-of-the art trailers, their expertly trained handlers, their 1903 Studebaker beer wagon and their unmistakable beauty and charm to the downtown arts celebration known as First Friday, on Friday, June 5 from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. in the downtown Canton Arts District.

Rock stars of the equestrian world; the Budweiser Clydesdales are transported in style and cause a sensation of delight wherever they travel. This is more than 100,000 miles a year, throughout the United States and away from their home in St. Louis, Missouri. Their June 5 stop in Canton, Ohio is made possible through the Downtown Special Improvement District and ArtsinStark, the county arts council.

With origins in Scotland, it was the breed’s hauling power and confident style that attracted North Americans to the Clydesdale. In fact, in the early days of brewing, it was said that a brewer’s success was directly related to how far his draft horses could pull a load in one day. Thus, the Clydesdales became the natural icon for the “king of beers.”
But not every Clydesdale can make the cut.

To qualify for the world-famous, eight-horse hitch, a Budweiser Clydesdale must stand 18 hands high (about 6 feet) at the shoulder when fully mature, and weight approximately 2,000 pounds. They must be geldings, bay in color, have four white stockings and a blaze of white on the face, as well as a black mane and tail. A gentle temperament also is important, as hitch horses meet millions of people each year. And, they often have a short name, like Duke, Captain, Mark. And of course, Bud.

The Budweiser Clydesdales and their own mascot Dalmatian will be travel through the Arts District delivering kegs to downtown restaurants beginning at 5:30 p.m. Following that from 6:30-8:00 p.m., they will be hitched to their wagon in the Kresge green space, at the corner of Market Avenue North and Fourth Street N for photos with the public and posing for a live painting demonstration by Sue Steiner of White Horse Studio (www.suesteiner.com). Steiner’s studio at Second April Galerie (324 Cleveland Ave NW) will feature equine art this month. Kelli's Horse Pencil Drawing to be Featured in the 2009 Kentucky Derby Celebration

My equine artwork will soon be part of Kentucky Derby history! This year the Louisville Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kentucky contacted me to order an exclusive line of 350 Derby-theme, limited edition prints. Each print has been personally signed, numbered and titled. The prints will become special commemorative gifts – to be given to guests of the Hyatt Regency on Derby weekend 2009.

I created the artwork, titled “Derby Dreams,” as a pencil drawing in my signature montage style. This layered drawing technique, combined with the classic look of black & white pencil drawing, makes my approach to horse artwork truly unique in the world of Equine Art. The original drawing has been framed by the Hyatt and will be on display in the lobby throughout the week of Derby events. The artwork will then become part of the Hyatt’s permanent collection.

I am so very grateful to Karen Patsfield, Executive Administrative Assistant of the Hyatt Regency, for being so wonderful to work with. Karen's organizational skills and management abilities made this large project a joyful process from start to finish. Guests of the Hyatt no doubt enjoy all of the attention to detail from such a fine staff!

New Thoroughbred Horse Racing Art

I have just released two new Limited Edition Prints, thanks to the completion of two new Pencil Drawings of Horse Racing.

The first piece is titled "Odds Are..." and features a full field of race horses just breaking out of the starting gate. There are several favorites in the pack, and three of those are highlighted as shown here. The print is available hand-tinted as shown, or in its original black & white form.

The second piece may be seen as a companion to the "Odds Are..." print and features three race horses in a neck and neck race to the finish. It is titled "Neck and Neck." (of course!) This print is also available hand-tinted as shown, or in its original black & white form.

It is my pleasure to share with you the following post about an extraordinary upcoming art exhibit. My dear friend, Photographer Deb Simon, will be the featured artist at the Glen Helen Ecology Institute in Yellow Springs Ohio. This show will run throughout the months of March and April 2009. And please join Deb on Friday March 20th, from 6 to 8 PM for the formal opening and reception!

Deb will have over 90 professionally framed photos at this gallery exhibit - the majority are being unveiled for the very first time. 20% of the proceeds will go towards the preservation of Glen Helen’s breathtaking and historical nature preserve. The gallery is in the Glen Helen building that houses the administrative offices & gift shop 405 Corry Street Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387 adjacent to the Nature Center. The opening event will be catered with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. And to add to the excitement, this is also the date of the Yellow Springs “Spring Fling” event. Marketing Pencil Drawings and other 2D Artwork on Products

Sell Your Pencil Drawings and other 2D artwork on something besides Paper!

While the mainstay of my business is my two dimensional art such as original pencil drawings, limited edition prints and note cards, I have found that putting my images on products is a great way to broaden the audience for my work.

Several years ago I set up a CafePress store so that I could sell my horse and dog drawings on shirts, mugs, totes and other items. While the store was somewhat time-consuming to set up, I have been quite happy with the results. And in the past couple of years CafePress has made tremendous improvements to their site, making it much easier to navigate and use.

It is important to know something about electronic image preparation before uploading artwork files. Most importantly, the file needs to be hi-resolution, which means at least 300dpi when printed at the largest reproduction size you plan to use. Effective resolution will be less if you start with a small file (say 2" wide) later try to reproduce the image at a larger size (say 6" wide).

I scan all of my artwork images as native Photoshop files. I then do any clean-up and/or image editing required. Once I am done, I re-save the file in jpg format, using the lowest compression option available. (Higher compression makes for a smaller files size, but more lost image data.)

When I design graphics that utilize vector art and lots of white background area, I generally save the file in the png format. This format has smoother gradients and leaves a nice, clean, white edge around the graphic.

Pencilplace.com has been revamped, reworked and redesigned!

In keeping with my philosophy that simpler and cleaner is better, I have re-designed my Pencil Drawings by Kelli Swan website. The new site sports a shorter, more concise index along with more direct navigation. There is also a scroll box on every page, so that users do not have to lose sight of the left index while navigating the site. Custom pencil art was created just for this site, and you will see that in the header design, the navigation buttons and the button rollover effects.

Stay tuned for more site updates soon. I plan to add more dynamic effects as soon as I become comfortable with the new Dreamweaver CS4 application!

Artist Marketing Materials

Marketing materials are very important in starting and building an art business. Some of the most important pieces include: business cards, flyers, an artist statement, and a bio/resume.

Create a business card, and keep plenty of them on hand. With the availability of online discount printing sources, business cards are downright cheap these days. Carry the cards with you, attach one to every original, print, necklace or anything else you sell. Hand them out at networking events. Post them on bulletin boards. The card should reflect your name and contact information. A nice slogan or tag line to help people remember you is also a great idea. Try to pick a form of contact that won’t change frequently. That might be a formal address, cel phone number, email address, website address or blog.

A nicely designed flyer is also quite valuable. The flyer should contain information about you and your work. People want to know about the artist! A great flyer would consist of your artist bio, your artist statement, a picture of you and 1-3 pictures of your work. An artist bio (short for biography) is written to tell people more about the artist. The bio can be written in 1st or 3rd person, though it is often found expressed as a third person view (appearing like a publication review of the artist.) The artist statement can be anything you choose, though most artist statements reflect an artist’s philosophy and vision for his or her work. The flyer does not have to be large or printed in full color. A 1/2 letter size sheet works well, and can be reproduced on home printers. On the back you might list your Awards and Accomplishments. (See sample Bios and Awards List for Pencil Drawings of Horses and Dogs.) You will want to include contact information on this sheet as well. As with the business card, attach one to everything you sell.

If you have enough written copy and pictures, consider a brochure. A 3-panel brochure, even a 1-color version, makes a nice addition to your marketing materials. They are also easy to drop in the mail as they fit in a #10 envelope. Add a greeting letter and a business card and you have a complete marketing package!

Methods of Reproducing Two Dimensional Artwork - Drawings and Painting

I am often asked by emerging artists: "How do I make prints?" This post will cover two of the most common forms of reproduction in use today. Many artists use one of the following methods for making print reproductions.

1) Offset Lithography
This is a traditional printing process involving the use of plates and ink with printing presses. Lithography is a great option for quantity if you plan to print at least several hundred copies of a print and have the funds to cover up front printing costs. Your cost-per-piece will likely be the lowest with offset lithography. To find a quality commercial printer, you may want to contact your local chamber of commerce and ask about printers who specialize in artist prints. Investigate mid-size print shops, as high end shops focus on much larger jobs than artist prints, and small shops may be more geared to lower-end production printing like advertisements, flyers, newsletters and the like. You want the best quality/price ratio you can get. My printer of choice for my pencil drawing reproductions is North Coast Litho.

Sometimes artists are intimidated by the higher initial cost of offset printing. Keep in mind that a commercial (offset) printer often utilizes giant sheets of paper. He may be able to run multiple prints on that same sheet (2-up, 4-up, etc.) This brings the cost per print down even further, something to be considered if you want numerous prints reproduced.

You can save some money by doing the pre-press file preparation yourself. If you do not possess the knowledge and skills to prepare work for reproduction, try finding a local graphic designer to assist you.

2) Digital Printing
This term covers ink jet, giclee, and other direct printing methods available today. The big plus with digital printing is the ability to print low quantities - even one print at a time. At the lower end of digital printing, you can purchase an ink jet printer (hopefully with archival inks and paper) and print your own reproductions. This assumes that you or someone you know has the ability to prepare the electronic files for optimal output.

At the higher end of the digital printing scale is the giclee print. While still a form of ink jet technology, the equipment used is geared for high-end output such as art prints. Giclee prints can even printed on canvas. Many professional color labs and some commercial printers offer giclee prints. Your cost/print will be higher than with offset lithography, but you can purchase only the number of prints you need. This can be an ideal way for an artist to get started selling reproductions. The same “pre-press” consideration applies here. If you can supply quality hi-res files, you will save money.

A note about archival inks and paper: I have seen artists selling reproductions printed by standard ink jet printers with regular paper. Look at those prints 6 months to a year later and you will often see a faded image on yellowed paper. It is similar to the effect you see on aged newsprint, and has the same cause - acidic ph of the paper. This highlights the importance of using archival paper and inks for your reproductions. The last thing you want is a happy customer today, who morphs into an unhappy customer next year, because his purchase from you had literally faded away.

Reproducing Two Dimensional Art: Open Edition Prints vs. Limited Edition Prints

In addition to knowing how to reproduce pencil drawings and other 2D artwork (a topic to be covered in detail in an upcoming post), one should consider the category in which the reproductions will be sold. This posting will address the difference between “open edition prints” and “limited edition prints.”

FYI - Two-dimensional reproductions are often referred to as prints, and I will use the terms here interchangeably. The term “print” is not to be confused with the original print-making process where an artist actually hand-creates each print. For this posting, a print will be known as a reproduction of an original painting, drawing or other two-dimensional piece of artwork.

An open edition print is a reproduction of unlimited quantity. You can print as many of them as you like. A limited edition print refers to a set number of copies of the work of art. Each reproduction is then signed and numbered by the artist for authenticity. As the total quantity available for sale is limited, the sale price for limited edition prints tends to be higher than that of open edition prints. This price ratio increases as the artist gains recognition.

The practice of limiting editions and numbering of reproductions dates back to early printing methods - when the quality of the images declined as the printing plates began to show evidence of wear. By limiting an edition to the best examples of an artist’s work, the artist protected both his or her artistic integrity and the value of the work to the collector. Printing methods have since advanced considerably and editions are now often limited for financial reasons. By ensuring the relative rarity of the work, an artist increases its value.

In addition to a fixed number of edition prints, there may also exist AP prints and HC prints. AP prints refer to Artist Proofs. Artist proofs also date back to early printing methods. These were the first sheets off the printing press which were used to determine ink coverage and general quality. As they were the first pieces to be printed, they were considered to be more valuable. AP prints are signed and numbered separately from the main edition. HC prints, or Hors De Commerce (not for trade) prints, are marked by the artist as prints to be used for business practice: such as samples, display only, etc. Occasionally there are also PP or Printers Proofs. These refer to the prints gifted to the printer responsible for printing the artwork.

A hand-tinted print is a variation on reproductions. Hand-tinting refers to the process of adding color highlights to black & white photographs or black & white reproductions. The process usually involves the application of watercolors or dies applied with a brush. Note that in the case of limited editions, any tinted prints are part of the same edition and not a separate edition. In other words, if print #43 is sold as a hand-tinted print, no other print #43 of the same image and size exists.

You can print open editions and limited editions of the same image, by the way. Try different sizes - perhaps an open edition with a small image that can be matted to fit an 8"x10" frame. Then run a larger print size in a smaller quantity and sign/number those prints as limited editions.

A limited edition print should include a “Statement of Reproduction.” This can be a label or certificate that contains at minimum the following information: title of artwork, reproduction method, artist name, publisher name, image size, copyright declaration, edition size and the number of the print. Also include your contact information. If your prints are matted or framed for sale, this statement should be affixed to the backing board behind the print.

Selling Original Art vs. Reproductions

One of the most common questions I have received from emerging 2D artists is whether to sell their original works or reproductions. Another popular question from emerging artists is “How do I make reproductions?”

Before getting into these two topics, let me share a piece of advice I received early in my career. I once had inquired of a mentor: “What should I draw? I don’t know what people will buy.” His reply echoes in my mind to this very day. Very directly he stated, “Forget what people will buy - you draw what you love.”

When one creates from a place of love or passion, the creative power that comes forth is quite strong. When one creates with the intent of manipulating circumstance (i.e. getting people to buy something), the creative process is distorted. Start with what you love or are passionate about in some way, then let the ideas flow from there.

Now, should you sell original works or reproductions? The answer for me from the start was a hearty “both!” Some artists do not like to part with their originals, and that is indeed a personal choice. My own feeling is that too many works accumulated in my storage area creates congestion, both physically and metaphysically. I like to keep the work moving out, so the consequential vacuum allows new ideas to flow in. Nature abhors a vacuum it is said, and you will find that the moving-out process invites the flowing-in process to continue its natural cycle.

Having said that, I always create a hi-resolution (hi-res) image of an original before it is posted for sale. This hi-res image gives you the freedom to reproduce the work later, and can be archived until such a decision is made. In past years a hi-res image meant a 4"x5" transparency shot by a professional photographer. These days it usually means a digital file that is created either with a scanner or a professional digital camera. If you do not have studio photography experience, then pay for professional quality image recording of your work. I repeat, this image needs to be the highest quality possible. It can be used later to make reproductions, advertise your work, apply to a juried exhibit, etc. This is not the place to pinch pennies.

“What kind of pencils do you use?”

I often receive emails posing this question. Many emerging artists have tremendous talent. They know the time and energy that goes into a detailed drawing, and they want to use the best materials possible.

My answer to this question surprises some. For the most part, I use ordinary pencils purchased from an office supply store. I like the mechanical pencils, as the leads are quite thin and thus give me a sharp point without wasting hours sharpening and making a corresponding mess. The mechanical pencils are available in several thicknesses too.

Most mechanical pencils come with HB leads. I do 90% of my drawing with this softness of graphite. Then, I use artist pencils in the B to 6B range to “punch out” the darkest areas of my drawing.

Stark County Artists Show Opens at the Massillon Museum

The Stark County Artists Exhibition opens this Saturday (December 13, 2008) at the Massillon Museum. The show opening will take place from 7-9 p.m. and it is open to the public. After Saturday, exhibition will then be on display during normal museum hours through February 8.

This year I will have many of my prints, note cards, books and ornaments for sale at the Heart of the Holidays Bazaar. The show is on Friday evening, December 5th from 5-9pm. The location is easy to find, as the show is hosted at the UCC church at the corner of 32nd Street and North Market (3129 Market Ave North).

This wonderful event is a fund raiser for the Merging Hearts Holistic Center in Canton, Ohio. There will also be jewelry by Off the Cuff, original artwork from Barb Lord, candles, Princess House items, crystals, essential oils, makeup, and much more! Live music will be provided by Jeff & Chris Kiko-Cozy. And, Jeff and Chris will be selling their great CDs!

Dog Sympathy Card - Pet Loss Sympathy Cards

I would like to introduce my latest design and offering: Pet Sympathy Cards! The idea for this project came from a conversation with my sister Chris. She was talking about the difficulty of finding nice pet sympathy cards, when it hit me -- I have the perfect design and message for just such a card.

The outside of the card shows a sleeping dog, and the phrase “Good Night Sweet Prince.” The inside of the card features a saying inspired by my father: “Never say Goodbye. But rather - Until we meet again ... across the Rainbow Bridge.” (I also have cards with the phrase “Good Night Sweet Princess.”)

Now offered through my Sunny Sense Cafe Press Store, these cards are available as pet sympathy cards - greeting card size, or, dog sympathy cards in 10-pack notecard size. I am thrilled to announce that two of my Original Pencil Drawings have been accepted into a juried exhibition at the Massillon Museum in Massillon, Ohio. The jurors selected 85 works from 320 entries by 126 artists for inclusion in the show.

Artwork donated for GPA Houston Fundraiser

This year I was given the opportunity to once again work with one of my favorite Dog Rescue groups -- the Houston GPA (Greyhound Pets of America.) We have had several collaborations together, of course always centered around the elegant and oh-so-artful Greyhound Dog! Those of you who have or are familiar with Greyhounds know what wonderful artistic subjects they make and what hams they can be!

The artwork created this year was art-directed by Arden and Jeff Tucker. You see, funds are being raised for a new rescue facility, and an artist rendering was needed to create a visual for people. Once the drawing was finished, they applied it as the theme for the big, fall Golf Tournament Fundraiser. Arden has kindly given her permission to post the samples her on my blog:

Percheron Draft Horse print used for Awards

This fall 20 of my Limited Edition Percheron Draft Horse Art Prints ("Parade Hitch") were used for the awards at the Geauga County Fair Draft Horse Show. My contact at the Agricultural Society tells me the prints were a big hit!
