Artwork donated for GPA Houston Fundraiser

This year I was given the opportunity to once again work with one of my favorite Dog Rescue groups -- the Houston GPA (Greyhound Pets of America.) We have had several collaborations together, of course always centered around the elegant and oh-so-artful Greyhound Dog! Those of you who have or are familiar with Greyhounds know what wonderful artistic subjects they make and what hams they can be!

The artwork created this year was art-directed by Arden and Jeff Tucker. You see, funds are being raised for a new rescue facility, and an artist rendering was needed to create a visual for people. Once the drawing was finished, they applied it as the theme for the big, fall Golf Tournament Fundraiser. Arden has kindly given her permission to post the samples her on my blog:

Percheron Draft Horse print used for Awards

This fall 20 of my Limited Edition Percheron Draft Horse Art Prints ("Parade Hitch") were used for the awards at the Geauga County Fair Draft Horse Show. My contact at the Agricultural Society tells me the prints were a big hit!

"Parade Hitch"

Stay tuned for some new Pencil Drawing artwork later this year. New drawings on the table include conceptual pieces comprised of both graphite pencil and colored pencil.

Cheers!

What is "Cygnet Graphics?"

Cygnet Graphics is the company through which I sell my work. “Cygnet” is the Latin word for young swan. “Graphics,” refers to “visual art that is written, printed, drawn or engraved.” Thus, Cygnet Graphics Ltd. was born. “Cygnet” is also my pen name used on original artwork and signed prints.

Integrative Living Resources in Ohio

My foremost personal interest is the rising of human consciousness -- the expanding of our awareness to the realization that we are all one. Having returned to Ohio from Arizona last year, I initially had difficulty locating services and sources to nourish my body, mind & spirit. Through a wonderful sequence of events, a number of incredible people came into my life. Inspired by their life paths, I have now started a new website, ExpandYourself.com, to collect Resources of Integrative Living in Northeast Ohio.

If you would care to suggest a business, individual or site link, please let me know! The site is still young, and I'm know that it will grow quickly. I plan to have national resource links as well.

Also, if you care to shop, checkout the Portraits of Awareness Store at the site. You will find inspirational images on all sorts of products!

What is a “Hand-Tinted” Print?

Many of my prints are available in their native black & white form, or, with color highlights as “hand-tinted” prints.

Hand-tinting refers to the process of adding color highlights to black & white photographs or black & white reproductions. The particular process used involves the application of water color(s) applied with a brush and/or pastel color(s) applied with a cloth. Note that any tinted prints are part of the same edition and not a separate edition. In other words, if print #43 is sold as a hand-tinted print, no other print #43 of the same image and size exists.

Farrier Art Pencil Drawings

Some of my newest pieces feature Farrier Johnny Rooker from Flagstaff, Arizona. Johnny is a supurb craftsman, and took care of my aged Morgan's feet through his final days (the horse, not Johnny!) I greatly enjoyed working on these drawings, and Johnny is the proud owner of the originals. I have signed and numbered limited edition prints available on these -- both b/w and hand-tinted with color hightlights (shown here):

A Little Bit about Copyrights

Several customers have recently asked me about copyrights - what they are and how they work. Copyrights become important when we want to discuss reproducing artwork.

A copyright is a form of intellectual property. In the case of visual arts, it pertains to the artwork created by an artist. It is separate and distinct from the artwork itself. In other words, purchase of any artwork, including original work, does not include the transfer of copyright, unless specifically stated in writing. In most cases, the artist retains the right to reproduce the image(s) in other mediums. Ownership of copyright is established upon the artist's completion of the work. Registration of the copyright with the Library of Congress is not required for ownership, but is required to pursue any legal action(s).

If you commission an artist for artwork, and intend to reproduce that artwork, make sure this is understood up front. You will need a written release of copyrights in order to legally reproduce the image.

What is a Limited Edition Reproduction?

All of my prints are sold as "Limited Editions," and I am sometimes asked what this means. Here is a brief explanation of "limited edition reproductions":

A Limited Edition Reproduction refers to a set number of replicas of a work of art, of which the plate, mold, or die is destroyed or mutilated after the desired number of copies has been made. The practice of limiting editions and numbering proofs originated with early printing methods, in which the quality of the proofs declined as the plates began to show evidence of wear. By thus limiting an edition to first-rate examples of an artist's work, the artist protected both his or her artistic integrity and the value of the work to the collector.

Editions are often limited now for financial reasons. By ensuring the relative rarity of the artist's work, he or she increases its value. (Two-dimensional reproductions are often referred to as prints, and the terms will be used here interchangeably. This is not to be confused with the “original print-making” process where the artist actually hand-creates each print.) Each print from the edition is signed and numbered by the artist for authenticity.

In addition to the fixed number of edition prints, there may also exist “AP” prints and “HC” prints. AP prints refer to Artist Proofs. Artist Proofs also date back to early printing methods. These are the first pulls off the press, used to determine ink coverage and other quality factors. As they are the first pieces to be printed, they are generally considered to be more valuable. AP prints are signed and numbered separately from the main edition. HC prints, or Hors De Commerce (not for trade) prints, are marked by the artist as prints to be used for business practice: such as samples, display only, etc. Occasionally there are also PP or Printers Proofs. These refer to very few proofs which are given to the printer responsible for printing the work.

In addition to personally signing and numbering my prints, I will also gladly inscribe any print with a more personal message!
